Jul 1, 2022 · SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California on Thursday became the first state to guarantee free health care for all low-income immigrants living in the country illegally, a move that will provide coverage for an additional 764,000 people at an eventual cost of about $2.7 billion a year.
California first extended health care benefits to low-income children without legal status in 2015 and later added the benefits for young adults and people over the age of 50. Now the last remaining group, adults ages 26 to 49, will be eligible for the state’s Medicaid program.
