September 15, 2023 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The flooding in Libya caused by Storm Daniel has resulted in significant loss of life and devastated infrastructure, creating a crisis for the displaced people now dealing with the aftermath.

The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, announced $5 million in funding to help humanitarian partners deliver immediate life-saving assistance, including emergency health, water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as shelter and non-food items, in the areas of northeastern Libya affected by the flooding.

This support will respond to the assessed needs identified in UN and Red Cross/Red Crescent appeals, including for the populations who have been displaced by the impact of the flooding.

This funding will add to the US$10 million allocated to this crisis through the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), to which Canada is a key donor.

“Canadians are saddened by the loss of life and terrible destruction caused by the flooding in Libya. Canadians believe in helping others in times of crisis, which is why the Government of Canada will provide life-saving assistance on the ground in Libya.”

    - Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development
