The ACA Governing Council endorsed the Advocacy Competencies in 2003. “The Advocacy Competencies were created to provide counselors with definitions, strategies and guidance to facilitate the process of working with clients and client communities to identify the most appropriate action and strategize appropriate actions,” Toporek says.
The intent of this chapter is to introduce one milestone, the American Counseling Association (ACA) Advocacy Competencies, and describe the events leading to their development. We then provide an overview of the Advocacy Competencies model including its dimensions and domains.
