7. Bring your meditation to a close. It's important not to finish meditating too suddenly. When you feel it's time to end, stop repeating the words and focusing on the breath, but stay in the same position with your eyes closed for a couple more minutes. Once you feel ready, gently open your eyes.

The second is to approach your return to practice in baby steps. I’m a big fan of the second approach. The first, total immersion, carries some risks.
Begin by taking one or two full, deep breaths, feeling your entire body release on the exhalation. Then gently close your lips and begin breathing at a natural pace through your nose. Bring your attention to the sensation of air moving into and out of your body.

I might understand intellectually the many benefits of meditation, but in the moment it feels better to me to check my email, to use all the time allotted for meditation skimming news about the latest Trump disaster, or to just plain start working first thing each morning.
