From the wheel to generative AI, innovation has always been the cornerstone of progress—propelling societies into new territories and new dimensions. To organizations, innovation means having an edge over the competition and increasing revenue while adapting quickly to a changing market.
Organizational innovation research examines what external and internal conditions induce innovation, how organizations manage innovation process, and in what ways innovation changes organizational conduct and outcome. Innovation in organizations is conceived both as process and outcome.
Feb 1, 2024 · Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, we found that innovative leadership comprises five dimensions: thinking creatively, holding the willpower to be innovative, tolerating different opinions and various risks, establishing mechanisms for innovation, and implementing innovation ideas.
- Spot opportunities for innovation. As innovation expert Greg Satell puts it, “No matter what form innovation takes—short, agile sprints or long-term, grand-challenge investments—innovation is fundamentally about solving problems.”
- Prioritize opportunities. You don’t have infinite time and resources, so prioritize potential innovations depending on where you think you’ll get the most bang for your buck.
- Test your potential innovations. Keep your experiments modest in scope, especially when you’re starting out. You may want to begin with “paper prototypes,” or simple drawings of the new product or process that your end users can interact with to see what works and what doesn’t.
- Build support for your innovations. Don’t be shy. Make sure the time is right and tell your story to all your stakeholders, including those whose resource backing you need and those who’ll directly benefit from your innovation.
Since innovation is a complex, company-wide endeavor, it requires a set of crosscutting practices and processes to structure, organize, and encourage it. Taken together, the essentials described in this article constitute just such an operating system, as seen in Exhibit 2.
