Teaching for clinical judgment development has never been more important. Schools of nursing are using strategies to teach clinical judgment, whether or not they have adopted a specific model within their curriculum.
This article provides an update on the state of the science of clinical reasoning and judgment in nursing, describes the influence of clinical judgment on patient safety, and identifies the academic, practice, and regulatory implications for promoting sound clinical judgment in new graduate and existing nurses.
Aim: The purpose of this article is to define clinical judgment, examine valid and reliable instruments to measure the construct, review established strategies by which to develop it, and propose key future nursing education research priorities in clinical judgment.
