Aug 5, 2024 · Sex steroid receptor activity controls the distribution and growth of adipose tissues. Here, the authors reveal that Cxcr4 regulates the Pparg-marked adipose lineage to restrict female fat mass by ...
Aug 15, 2017 · To test the possibility that the levels of sex steroid hormones modulate the synthesis and/or secretion of this important adipokine, independent of changes in fat depots, we used 3T3-L1 cells, a ...

Aug 1, 2017 · However, sex specifics already occur before puberty, suggesting that at least some mechanisms of differential adipose tissue distribution are unrelated to sex steroids [44], [45]. Interestingly, and apart from gonadal steroids, the number of X chromosomes also contributes to sex-specific differences in obese mice [46] , and in 47, XYY men a trend to elevated central adiposity is observed [47] .

There is evidence that sex steroids play a role in the function of BAT. 12 In both rodents and humans, females have more BAT activity than males. 34,35 Experimental studies support the notion that estrogens promote UCP1 expression, whereas testosterone decreases it. 36 In female rats, ovariectomy result in a reduction in UCP1 expression that is restored with estrogen treatment. 37
Sep 30, 2004 · In the nongenomic mechanism, the sex steroid hormone binds to its receptor in the plasma membrane, and second messengers are formed. This involves both the cAMP cascade and the phosphoinositide cascade. Activation of the cAMP cascade by sex steroid hormones would activate hormone-sensitive lipase leading to lipolysis in adipose tissues.

The aforementioned findings indicate that sex steroids and other sex-specific factors regulate leptin. Furthermore, leptin transcript expression is higher in the subcutaneous WAT of pre-menopausal women than that in post-menopausal women (Hong et al. 2007), presumably due to the higher E2 concentrations found in younger women.
