In Super Smash Bros, characters have lost their physical forms and become Spirits, which can be collected to augment the power of your Fighters, opponents, and even Amiibo Fighters.
Spirits are a new mode and mechanic in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They are featured a dedicated mode Spirit Board, as well as in the primary mechanic of the Adventure Mode, World of Light. Spirits can by acquired by playing those modes, bought from the in-game shop, or earned by completing Challenges. Certain Spirits can be earned after completing Classic Mode, replacing Trophies which were used in previous titles. Trophies in the Smash Bros. series have been used to reward players and represent/celebrate other video games. Masahiro Sakuri, the game's director, stated that Trophies would have required too many resources to produce in this game due to the vast amount of content. Spirits were a unique way to be able to pay tribute to other games and have the added affect of enhancing game play.
Spirits used in battle can cause a variety of changes to a Fighter's stats, status effects, items equipped, and stage hazards. There are two varieties of Spirits that you will be able to use to customize your fighters, Primary Spirits and Support Spirits. Spirits can also be used while playing multiplayer Smash by enabling them in the Rules Menu. Check out our Spirit Battles page for more info!
Primary Spirits have an amount of Power that will add to your fighter's stats (attack and defense). Leveling up a Spirit will increase its Power. Primary Spirits feature 0 - 3 slots which allows them to be combined with Support Spirits.
•Each Primary Spirit has an associated Type: Attack, Shield, or Grab, or Neutral. The first three form a Weapon Triangle. Shield beats Attack. Attack beats Grab. Grab beats Shield. Having Spirits imbued with a Type that beats your opponent can increase your effectiveness, and in Spirit Battles.
•Some Primary Spirits provide Traits, which provide status effects for your Fighter, such as higher or lower jumping ability, increased strength or resistance to certain attacks check out the Spirit List below for more!
•If you play World of Light, you can find locations that can alter your Primary Spirits' attributes.
Support Spirits can only be equipped if you have a Primary Spirit on your team. The number of slots available is based on how many the Primary Spirit has available and determines the Support Spirits you are able to use.
•Every Support Spirit has a cost. The cost is the amount of slots they occupy on the Primary Spirit. Most Support Spirits only occupy one slot, many occupy two, and a rare few require three!
•Every Support Spirit has a Skill. Skills will aid you in your battle and can be a huge factor in determining how well you'll do during a battle.
•For a complete catalog of Support Spirits, click here.
When used together, they will display a Team Power. While Primary Spirits mostly provide attack and defensive power, Support Spirits can affect anything from starting a match with a chosen item, to negating the effects of certain Spirit Battles, like lowering the effect of stage hazards. Picking the right Support Spirits for the job can spell the difference between victory and defeat in difficult battles. Check the conditions of the battle before you start to assign the best team possible. You can assign Spirits manually or press (Y) to assign Primary and Support Spirits based on the game's recommendation for the battle.
•Use the SORT and FILTER to scroll through your list of Spirits more efficiently. You can also Favorite Spirits by highlighting them and pressing (ZL).
Spirits used for battles have one of four ranks. A Spirit's Rank gives a glimpse of the strength and rarity of the Spirit.
Every Primary Spirit you receive will be at Level 1. Any Primary Spirit you assign to your fighter will gain experience after being used in battle, and can level up to increase their Power. Some Spirits are even enhanceable - and once they reach their max level (99), they will turn into an upgraded version offering superior stats. Their enhanced forms will begin at Lv1 and are able to be leveled up regularly like a new Spirit.
You can also gain Snacks as rewards to further their experience if you aren't using them in battle. Snacks require spending Spirit Points (SP). SP and Snacks can be earned from Spirit Battles. In World of Light, you can encounter certain locations that can help your Primary Spirits gain experience. These locations can increase the levels of your Spirits while you play and even when the game is off.
As you play, you may obtain duplicates of Spirits you already own. You can dismiss any Spirits you don't want. (Spirits marked as, "Favorite," cannot be dismissed. Remove the Favorite label to dismiss them). Doing so will earn you SP and cores. Cores can be combined to Summon certain Spirits. Certain Spirits can only be obtained by summoning them.
•To learn more about Summoning Spirits click here.
In addition to Primary and Support Spirits, two other Spirit varieties are featured in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. These Spirits cannot be assigned to Fighters or used for battles.
•Master Spirits are found only through playing World of Light. You will have to win their battle to free these Spirits. Winning these battles will grant you access to different locations that can be used to buy new Spirits and train your Spirits. For more on Master Spirits, click here.
There are a few different ways you can access the full list of all Spirits you've obtained and encountered. The easiest way is use the Dashboard Menu by Pressing (ZR) and selecting COLLECTION (another way is on the Main Menu> SPIRITS> COLLECTION). Select INVENTORY> SPIRIT LIST. Spirits you've obtained are selectable. Spirits that you've encountered are displayed as faded; while those you've yet to see are hidden. The full list of Spirits as they appear in the game is below (1336, as of 4.0.0 Update, 7/30/2019).
New Spirits will continue to be added through updates, Spirit Board Events and DLC. Spirits added after the game's release begin at #1298.
