- More specifically, tone encodes morphemes, and intonation gives utterances a further discoursal meaning that is independent of the meanings of the words themselves.

Whether concerning tone, vowel harmony or other processes, assimilation is captured by spreading a feature from one anchor to another, represented by a dashed association link, as in (1a). This contrasts with the earlier view represented by SPE (Chomsky & Halle 1968) where assimilation was expressed via feature copying, as in (1b). a. X. b. →. X.

The early autosegmental notion of tiers of representation that were distinct but conceptually equal soon gave way to a model with one basic tier connected to tiers for particular kinds of articulation, including tone and intonation, nasality, vowel features, and others.
Compare this process to where a high tone becomes a rising tone before a low tone. In linear phonology, there is no reason to expect to find one phenomenon rather than the other. Both are expressible in feature notations. In autosegmental phonology only the former process is permitted; the latter is deemed inexpressible in autosegmental theory.
We often use acute (á) and grave (à) accent marks to mark primary and secondary stresses. In strict IPA usage, these marks are reserved for tone, and today we’ll use them only for tone. á = [a] with high tone à = [a] with low tone a, or sometimes just “a” = [a] with mid tone â = [a] with falling tone (high then low)
Tone tier. The tone tier contains the features that show the distribution of tones in the phonological representation. The features in the tone tier are [+/– high pitch] and [+/– low pitch], and they are assigned to the tone-bearing units of the language (syllables or moras).
The principal innovation of autosegmental phonology, as presented in Goldsmith 1976, was the idea that tone mapping rules do not merge tonal and segmental representations, but associate their elements by means of formal entities known as Association Lines.
Feb 18, 2010 · This chapter offers an account of Pierrehumbert's model for the description of tone and intonation. Her seminal thesis (Pierrehumbert 1980) presented a descriptive framework for intonation which separated the phonological representation from its phonetic implementation.
