May 10, 2021 · The basic formats for citing a book in a Chicago footnote and a bibliography entry are as follows: Short notes always follow the same basic format. Full notes and bibliography entries contain additional information if the book specifies an edition, translator, or editor, and follow a specific format when citing an individual chapter in a book.
Books published by the author should be cited according to information available on the title page or copyright page. In place of publisher, include language such as “self-published” (abbreviated as “self-pub” in notes, but not a bibliography) or “printed by the author” is usually appropriate.
Citing a book in Chicago style using the notes and bibliography format includes elements such as the author’s full name, title of the book, place of publication, publisher name, publication date, and page number (used only for a footnote citation).
In a work with a bibliography, the first reference should use a shortened citation which includes the author’s name, the source title, and the page number (s), and consecutive references to the same work may omit the source title and simply include the author and page number.
