A colon sets apart the words that follow it and draws attention to them. If you omit the colon from a sentence, it will have an awkward feel and confuse readers.

Jun 29, 2023 · Sentence structure is the order of all the parts in a sentence: subject, predicate, objects, phrases, punctuation, etc. It deals a lot with independent and dependent clauses and how they combine (explained below), the placement of words and phrases next to what they modify, as well as the use of proper grammar.
- Practice Using Relative Clauses. I’ve talked a bit about different types of clauses in another post, but I didn’t talk about relative clauses. So, what are they?
- Practice Using Compound Sentences. If you’ve noticed that you use too many simple sentences, as I said before, that’s a good thing! It shows you’re making progress.
- Practice Using Complex Sentences. They might sound intimidating, but a complex sentence doesn’t mean a sentence is complicated. Unlike a compound sentence, a complex sentence combines an independent clause and a dependent clause - or a clause that cannot stand on its own as a sentence.
- Practice Using the Active and Passive Voice. You might have learned about the active voice and passive voice in school, but do you feel comfortable using them?
- Use the Active Voice for Dynamic Writing. When you use the active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action toward the object: Kelly scored the winning goal.
- Connected Items Must Follow a Parallel Structure. When a sentence includes a list or series of actions, it’s vital that each item follows the same grammatical form
- Master Your Modifiers. A modifier is a word or phrase that adds a description to something else in the sentence. Used correctly, modifiers make your writing more interesting.
- Don’t Use Too Many Subordinate Clauses. Subordinate (or dependent) clauses provide extra information in a sentence. They make writing more interesting, but if you use too many of them, you risk confusing your reader by overloading them with too much detail at once.
