- Listen carefully to the other person. You might have already heard of “active listening.” Active listening is about really paying attention to the person you’re talking to and being present in the conversation.
- Find out what you have in common with someone. The best way to keep a conversation going is when both you and the person you talk to are interested in continuing it.
- Ask personal questions to move past small talk. Small talk is important, as it builds rapport and trust, but it can become dull after a while. Try to gradually move the conversation towards more personal or meaningful topics.
- Use your surroundings to find things to say. Many websites on the internet that promise to help you develop good conversation skills have long lists of random conversation topics.
- Listen to what the other person is saying. If you’re too focused on what you should say next, you’ll miss opportunities to follow up on good talking points right in front of you.
- Express yourself openly and honestly. People can sniff out insincerity pretty well, and if you’re covering up, they’ll feel less like confiding in you.
- Avoid making judgments. No matter whether the person you’re talking to is your romantic partner or a relative stranger, if you come across as judgmental, the other person will feel less like confiding in you.
- Look for obvious cues as conversation jumping-off points. People you don’t know that well may reveal features about their interests or background just by what they’re wearing.
