- Freeze! It is hard to have a video call go without someone’s screen freezing in an awkward position. Turn this sad reality into a game by trying to fool each other into thinking you’re frozen.
- Word of the day. At the start of each meeting, pick a word of the day such as “cucumber.” See who can slip the word into the conversation without others noticing: “I really think that if we cucumber the system with a little extra investment, everything will work much faster.”
- Home office scavenger hunt. If all your people are working from home, organize a rapid-fire home office scavenger hunt. Come up with a list of three to five items using the list below for ideas.
- Moving troll. Have everyone on your team pick an object like a little troll or book they have in their home office. Before each call, have people move the object to a different location within the camera’s view.
Once a virtual meeting has been deemed necessary, try implementing these 10 realistic tips (read: does not require fancy new software or expensive meeting tools) to banish boredom, keep things interactive, and encourage participation.
- The 60-second rule. First, never engage a group in solving a problem until they have felt the problem. Do something in the first 60 seconds to help them experience it.
- The responsibility rule. When people enter any social setting, they tacitly work to determine their role. For example, when you enter a movie theater, you unconsciously define your role as observer — you are there to be entertained.
- The nowhere to hide rule. Research shows that a person appearing to have a heart attack on a subway is less likely to get help the more people there are on the train.
- The MVP rule. Nothing disengages a group more reliably than assaulting them with slide after slide of mind-numbing data organized in endless bullet points.
- Start with a personal connection. In order to have an effective meeting, it's important to first create personal connections. Even when people are already familiar with each other, it helps to build safety and personal connection with the other participants.
- Make it interactive (with Liberating Structures) Even more so than with regular meetings, it's very hard to stay focused when you’re essentially listening to someone going on and on about something.
- Break down your interactions. Whenever you bring a group together for a conversation, it is likely that the more dominant voices overwhelm the more silent ones.
- Use a digital surface to collect your insights. In a regular meeting, you usually have access to flips and whiteboards. Not only do they offer a surface to track insights and ideas, but it also helps groups think by keeping a trace of their shared memories on a tangible surface.
