Draw an arrow to the drawing that explains how the shadow looks, point out the highlight, record what you are learning. Just the act of writing information down, helps your memory retain it. Then look for other examples of what you have observed. The more actively you engage, the more the lessons become second nature.

- Work from hard to soft pencils. Starting with harder pencils lets you work from lighter to darker shades. Drawing pencils have different graphite hardnesses based on the marks you’re trying to make.
- Hold your pencil loosely. A higher, looser grip lets you draw lighter, sketchier lines. Rather than holding your pencil tightly and close to the tip, relax your grip.
- Warm up by drawing lines and circles. Spending a few minutes warming up improves the quality of your lines. Before you hop into your actual sketch, take out a fresh sheet of paper and start drawing straight lines, curves, and circles.
- Try drawing from a reference. Using a reference lets you compare your sketch directly to an original. Instead of drawing how you think the object should look, really focus on sketching in the shapes and lines you can actually see.
- Perspective drawing. While learning to draw perspective is something many beginners find boring or challenging, it is undoubtedly necessary for improving the believability of your art.
- Value drawing practice with white chalk and toned paper. Using white chalk on toned paper alongside your preferred drawing medium (graphite or charcoal) is an excellent exercise for drawing values.
- Draw from life. While drawing from photo references is super convenient, training yourself to draw from life offers value in improving observational skills, hand-eye coordination, understanding perspective and space, and building a strong visual library.
- Gesture sketching practice. Gesture drawing is a fundamental art exercise to observe the essence of what you’re about to draw and capture overall impressions, volumes, movement, and flow in a handful of pencil strokes.
