  1. Feb 18, 2021 · Learn how to properly paint oak with this proven process to hide the grain and achieve lasting results. The process that I am going to share with you can be used on oak kitchen cabinets, oak paneling, doors, or oak trim. The process is all that same with slight variances in the paint you choose for each area.

    • Take before photos. You’ll want a few snapshots to look back on because the before and after will be shocking! Make sure you clean the lens of your phone camera, hold it straight and about chest high, and then snap away.
    • Label and remove doors/drawers. Before you begin removing hinges, don’t forget to label everything! All you need are painter’s tape, a Sharpie marker, and a simple numbering system.
    • Clean cabinet doors, drawers and face frames. I’ve been asked many times, “Why do I need to clean first if I’m going to be sanding? Won’t sanding essentially clean the surface?”
    • Sand wood with 120. After the wood has dried from cleaning, use an electric orbital sander with 120-grit paper to remove most of the existing finish from the flat surfaces.
    • Fill in the grain. Yes or No? First things first – take a look at your oak cabinets. See that distinctive grain pattern? That’s exactly what a lot of people DON’T want to see in their painted cabinets.
    • Brush on the first coat. Look, I get it. Once you’ve done the prep work of dealing with the wood grain, it can be tempting to grab a can of primer and start spraying it.
    • Put the water-based primer back on the shelf! Water-based primers are not the best. I know, I know….this isn’t what you wanted to hear, but trust me, using an oil-based primer is SO much better in the long run when you are painting oak cabinets.
    • Choose your sheen carefully. Here’s a handy rule to keep in mind: the higher the sheen, the more you’ll see the grain pattern. Semi-gloss and gloss paints will reflect more light which will highlight the pattern of the grain.
