Jan 11, 2024 · What Does An Outside Hitter Do In Volleyball? The outside hitter is what we call a ‘passer hitter’ which means their role is twofold: pass the ball first, and then hit the ball. They operate out of the left side of the court, usually passing from position 5 and hitting from position 4.
- Downball Dig Hitting Lines. Everyone knows this drill. It’s basically just a warm-up hitting lines drill. The ball starts with the outside hitter in position 1 (as above).
- Release Ball Hitting Drill. This drill looks to simulate a poor pass where the setter is forced to make a long distance high arcing ‘release’ set to the outside hitter.
- Pipe Hitting Drill. This drill is no different to the initial downball dig drill, only that we’re now hitting from the back/middle zone instead of the left side of the court.
- Block Tooling Drill. This is another simple variation of the initial downball dig drill. The only difference is that we now have 1,2, or 3 blockers on the other side of the net.
