Course Description. This course provides techniques of effective presentation of mathematical material. Each section of this course is associated with a regular mathematics subject, and uses the material of that subject as a basis for written and oral presentations. The section presented here is on chaotic dynamical systems.
Use the boards in order Start by erasing anything that the previous class left on the board. Begin writing on the left with one of the movable boards, then push it up and write on the bottom left board, and work your way rightwards, always making sure that you first write on a board that can be pushed up. Students must come to the first meeting with a draft of a ten-page paper having an adequate amount of technical mathematics, such as a term paper from an MIT subject or a research report from an REU or UROP. These drafts are revised through six or so, two-week cycles of three activities: 1. copy-editing by the instructors, 2. individual conferences...
Each first lecture must be on the subject of the student’s paper. The second and third lectures may continue the preceding one, or may be on an entirely different subject of the student’s choosing. Thus the audience is encouraged to pay close attention to the lecture, and then to reflect on its contents and on its presentation. Moreover, the writing process provides good basic exercise in both technical...
