  1. Aug 20, 2024 · Building a youth ministry with these 7 components of youth ministry in mind doesn’t have to be difficult. In general, all you have to do is gather and invest. Gather your students, whether you are starting from scratch or already have a group of involved students, and find a way to engage with them. It’s important to remember that they have ...

  2. Oct 21, 2024 · But actually, what you’ll discover over the course of your journey leading a brand-new youth group is that what you do matters far less than who you do it with. It’s a beautiful thing when one student shows up on Friday night for the awesome Friday night activity you’ve planned, and you get to go on an exciting, uncertain ride with the Holy Spirit navigating 90 minutes of one-on-one time.

    • Do something. The worst thing you can do is nothing at all. Don’t wait until you have youth ministry figured out. Find some volunteers and give them a room and a time.
    • Think through your philosophy. Now that you’re doing student ministry, take some time to work on the ministry. Gather a leadership team and work together to craft a philosophy for student and family ministry.
    • Know your context and people. As with your church more broadly, you need to ask demographic questions about your church’s next generation. Where are they coming from?
    • Build a team of volunteers. A lead pastor can’t lead his church’s student ministry on his own. Even a strong leadership team needs a core of volunteers who understand their vision and can implement it.
    • Offer free food. This one may go without saying, but I've never seen students flock to anything more than to food they don't have to pay for. Even in torrential downpours, if pizza is going to be provided, students will show up with umbrellas in hand.
    • Make school visits. One of the best things you can do for your student ministry is to establish a relationship with local schools. Whether it be a visit to the lunch room to hang out with some students or leading a morning devotional, getting in front of young adults in one of their natural habitats is a great strategy to get them into youth group.
    • Have students bring their friends. A couple of times a semester, have a big, fun outreach night and challenge your students to bring a few of their friends.
    • Build a system. Getting students in the front door is great, but if you don't have a system in place to keep them coming back, all of your effort won't be worth it.
  3. Jun 24, 2024 · Here’s my advice for how to start a youth ministry in a small church: Start with prayer. That may seem like the biggest cliché ever, and you may even be tempted to skip this point altogether. But it’s a truth I can’t stress enough: You need to start with prayer. Before you do anything else, before you call any meetings, plan any events ...

  6. Feb 28, 2023 · Start small. The goal of starting a youth ministry isn’t necessarily to build the next megachurch—start with smaller goals in mind. Begin by attracting a few students who will help set the tone and serve as ambassadors to get more students involved in the youth ministry. Create an uplifting environment.
