The upgraded pet will have its level adjusted based on its XP. For example, a RARE pet with 4.6 million cumulative XP (level 86) will be adjusted to level 81 when it is upgraded to EPIC. Using a Tier Boost Pet Item will boost the rarity of a pet by 1 (similar to a Recombobulator) until the Pet Item held by the Pet is changed.

Oct 26, 2019 · All rarity pets have same passive effects (like the +X crit damage etc.) Common ones have one abbility, with the lowest max boost. (Ex. common squid pet's first abbility is maxed at +50% more squids, but leg is +100%) Uncommon ones is an upgrade to the common ones, boosting the first abbility.
Most Pets can have their Rarity upgraded via Kat in the Pet Care house. When upgrading a pet, it keeps its XP, but due to the different XP scaling of the new rarity, it will typically lose some levels, unless it's at level 1, has enough XP to stay at level 100, or is upgrading to MYTHIC (which has the same scaling as LEGENDARY ).

For Crafted pets, you need a super enchanted egg for epic or legendary. It's random, with a 20% chance of legendary. For dropped pets, (most) come in an epic form but they have a 20% chance of being legendary. If you have a pet you can upgrade it to Legendary via Kat or if it's epic use a tier boost (But I don't suggest using a boost)
