In 1291–91a he decides to be gentle to Pseudolus, just as in the last scene of the fourth act; in 1294–1304 he attacks him verbally and physically; and in 1313–32 there is a role reversal, with Simo entreating Pseudolus for some of the money he has to hand over and with Pseudolus playing the master.
As Pseudolus, Simo’s slave, and Calidorus, Simo’s son, emerge from Simo’s house, Pseudolus asks a dreary Calidorus what’s troubling him. He wonders what Calidorus has written on his tablet and points out that he’s always been Calidorus’s “closest confidante” (17).
In this fifth scene, Simo complains bitterly about his son’s profligate lifestyle and his being corrupted by Pseudolus. Callipho, a mild old gentleman, advises him to stay calm and not to be too strict. Pseudolus now sees his chance to sort out the second task, the procurement of the money.
