Emotion regulation is an adaptive ability affecting people’s physical and mental health, quality of life and functioning. In the present study we focused on the influence of the intensity of experienced emotions on emotion regulation strategies (ERS) that are applied in everyday life.

Emotion regulation (ER) refers to attempts to influence emotions in ourselves or others. Over the past several decades, ER has become a popular topic across many subdisciplines within psychology. One framework that has helped to organize work on ER is the process model of ER, which distinguishes 5 families of strategies defined by when they impact the emotion generation process. The process ...
From a psychotherapeutic perspective, among the major benefits of mindfulness practice is the development, during mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, of more effective ER strategies on the part of the patient due to the relationship with the therapist, whose internal representation in the patient allows a third-person observation of himself without judgement (for a review, see Davis and Hayes ...

We used data from the EE-SOEP-IS study (Everyday Experiences [EE] in the Innovation Sample [IS] of the Socio-Economic Panel Study [SOEP]; Richter, & Schupp, 2015; Siebert et al., 2017). The EE-SOEP-IS study consisted of two waves of ESM, approximately 1 year apart (for details, see Siebert et al., 2017). The principal investigator of the study (A.B...
ESM measures were identical for both waves. Descriptive information for each wave including individuals’ means, standard deviations, and the intra-class correlations (ICCs) at stressor occasions are reported in Table 2. To summarize associations, correlations between variables across both waves (at the level of the individual) are reported in Table...
At each beep, participants were asked whether a stressor had occurred since the last beep or since waking up (at the first beep of the day). Participants either answered yes (coded 1) or no (coded 0). Only stressor occasions are included in these analyses. When participants reported a stressor, they were asked to rate on a 7-point scale how much th...
Data was prepared and analyzed in IBM SPSS Version 25 for Windows, Mplus Version 8.3, and SAS Version 9.4. For our analyses, we used multilevel modeling (MLM) with restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimation. The models were three-level models with beeps (level 1) nested within waves (level 2), and waves nested within individuals (level 3). We ...
Jun 1, 2023 · The existing research has shown that different personality traits are related to the effectiveness of emotion regulation strategies [26], that is, personality traits affect the selection of proper emotion regulation strategies. Therefore, their relationships should be considered in emotion regulation tool design by selecting/applying proper emotion regulation strategies into practice.
The strength and direction of association between ER strategy use and emotional context may depend on the data collection paradigm. Two other studies – examining individuals in daily life – found age-related differences in the association between ER strategy use and negative emotion that contrast with each other and with the laboratory studies.

Importantly, condition and gender did not influence the probability of the use of any of the ER strategies; for condition all ps were > .05, for gender ps were < .05 for some ER strategies, but significance of results did not change in comparison to not including gender. 3 Further, we also examined whether adolescents’ higher peak negative affect was associated with using more ER strategies.
