The structure of Canadian agriculture has changed significantly over the last century, and consequently so must the policies targeted toward the sector. The most obvious change is the significant decline in the number of farms and farmers, and a corresponding increase in farm size ( Goddard et al. 1993).

The size of the average farm has increased from 676 to 809 acres from 2001 to 2021 (Table 1). However, it is important to approach the metric of “average farm size” with caution as it includes any farm property, including those identified as such for tax purposes.
