Oct 29, 2020 · Fayette County was created with five other counties. The legislature discovered that Fayette was smaller than they had intended and added five land districts from Henry County. A land lot district is nine square miles and was divided into 256 land lots of 2021/2 acres. In December 1821, Fayette County was 36 miles long and 7 miles wide.
Fayette County was created out of the municipalities of Colorado and Mina, (the present Bastrop County). An act to establish the same was passed by the Congress of the Republic of Texas Dec. 14, 1837. By a later act of that body, May 3, 1838, the southwestern boundary of the county was more clearly defined.

Fayette County was formed in 1821 out of parts of the lands of the Creek Indian Nation and is named after Marquis de LaFayette, who, though from France, was one of Gen. George Washington’s key commanders during the Revolutionary War. Notable landmarks include the historic Fayette County Courthouse, Starr’s Mill and Lake Peachtree.
Admittedly, I am no expert on Fayette County history, so much of the following information will be taken from "The History of Fayette County, 1821-1871," compiled and edited by my dear friend and co-worker, Carolyn Cary, and published by the Fayette County Historical Society back in 1977.
Organized in 1821. Named after the Marquis De La Fayette. Length, 27 m.; breadth, 18 m.; area square miles, 486. The Flint River passes along the eastern part of the county. Fayetteville is the county town, 107 miles from Milledgeville. Jonesborough is a thriving place, situated on the Macon and Western Railroad.
