Age: 0-5. Word Count: Less than 300 for babies. Max 500 words for toddlers. Max 1000 words for preschoolers. Sub-categories: PBs go from image only board books all the way up to full stories with significant illustrations.
Age: 5-7. A step up from picture books, these are for kids who have just started reading by themselves. They are short books, usually with a lot of illustrations. Word Count: Can be publisher specific, ranging from 3,000 to absolute max 5,000.
Age: 9-12 Word Count: When I started writing three years ago, the MG word count I kept hearing was no more than 30,000 words. Now I’m seeing a lot more MG books with up to 60,000 words, so I think the water has become a bit murky here. Err on the side of caution; the younger the audience, the less the word count.
Age: 12-15 Word Count: Less than 70,000 unless it’s fantasy or sci-fi, which can stretch to 90,000 at a push.
Age: 14-adult. Y.A books have a teenage protagonist, but if you want to write Y.A you should be aware that the majority of readers are actually adults. - Board Books. Age: 0-3. Wordcount: None-100. These are books that we call babies first books (Although they should really be called babies first chew toy!).
- Picture Books. Age: 3-8. Wordcount: 250-1,000 (The current sweet spot is 500 words or less for the commercial trade market and some picture books may have less than 100 words or even none!)
- Early Reader. Age: 5-9. Word Count: 1,500-2,000. It’s very exciting when a child can start to read for themselves. Kids are proud and parents are overjoyed to see kids reading.
- Chapter Book. Age: 6-9 or 7-10. Word Count: 8,500-12,000 (Can go up to 20,000 words for older readers.) Chapter book series were my favorite to read in elementary school, and that’s the truth for a lot of kids.
