Aug 8, 2009 · Rachel envied her sister, Leah, and Leah hated Rachel because Ya’akov (Jacob) loved her. The names of the his 12 sons reflect this tug of war between the sisters and contain prophecies to be fulfilled hundreds of years later.
She has three more sons, namely Simeon, Levi and Judah, but does not bear another son until Rachel offers her a night with Jacob in exchange for some mandrake root (דודאים, dûdâ'îm). Leah gives birth to two more sons after this, Issachar and Zebulun, and to Jacob's only daughter, Dinah.
In Canaan, Rachel gave birth to Jacob's final son, Benjamin, but, tragically, she died in childbirth. So the final birth order of Jacob's thirteen children by these four women was: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Dinah, Joseph, and Benjamin.
- Reuben. Reuben was the firstborn son of Jacob with his wife Leah. His birth is recorded in Genesis 29:32 – “And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said, ‘Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.'”
- Simeon. Simeon was the second son born to Jacob through Leah. Genesis 29:33 states – “She conceived again and bore a son, and said, ‘Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also.’
- Levi. Levi was the third son of Leah and Jacob. His birth is recorded in Genesis 29:34 – “Again she conceived and bore a son, and said, ‘Now this time my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.’
- Judah. Judah was the fourth son born to Leah. Genesis 29:35 states – “And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, ‘This time I will praise the Lord.’
