The eighth season of Columbo originally aired from February 6 to May 1, 1989 and consisted of four episodes. It was the first Columbo season to be produced by and aired on ABC, as well as the first one made in the 1980s. It was the first season of the show in nearly eleven years after it was ended by NBC with Season 7.

•This is the only season of Columbo to be four episodes long, making it the second shortest season overall as well the shortest of the ABC run.
•Despite previous murderers having made attempts to bump him off in the past, Columbo Goes to the Guillotine marks the first time that Columbo appears to actively risk his life by willingly lying down on the guillotine during the climax.
•Across the four episodes of this season, there are four murders committed. This makes it the only season of the show where the number of murders matches up exactly with the number of episodes. Every other season features at least one episode containing a double murder.
