Work had begun in June of 1900 on sinking two mine shafts: Shafts 3 and 4, later known officially as Cokeburg Mine 53 and Mine 54. The first coal produced in No. 3 in 1902 was processed into coke and then shipped out by rail.
The 238-acre Cokeburg coal patch consists of four-bay, frame duplex houses rhythmically marching up and down sloping hills. Today, their location close to Bentleyville on PA 917 has allowed them to survive, even without the mining operations. An excellent view of Cokeburg may be seen from TWP 441 north of Scenery Hill.
Cokeburg is located at 40°6′0″N80°3′49″W / 40.10000°N 80.06361°W (40.100120, -80.063637). [ 7 ] According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km 2), all land. Cokeburg is drained by Pigeon Creek. The borough is crossed by Pennsylvania Route 917.

Bethlehem designated Cokeburg their No. 53 mine, and they closed it in 1953. By then Cokeburg had become one of the few coal company towns in Western PA to become a borough. Like all the other patches Cokeburg was an immigrant magnet, and, as recently as the 1990s, had many Croatian-American families (second or third generation).
