Escape The Backrooms is an indie game made by Fancy Games. It first released on August 11th, 2022. Part 2 released on January 12th, 2023, Part 3 released on June 15th, 2023, and Part 4 released on January 25th, 2024. In this guide, you will understand general information on every level, how to beat every level, how to handle threats, as well as information on each item. There are also a few movement techs to learn that will assist your game. If you are interested in speed running the game, you can find a guide for that here. This guide will only be covering information relevant to the latest version of the game, so older versions may have more or less things to be aware of.

A big part of the guide is made by Roystbit with help from Ghost, The, and CROSSANT.

Stamina: The duration of time you can run before you are exhausted. By default (no stamina boosts), you can run for 4 seconds straight, after which you will not be able to run for 4 seconds. Stamina is also expended as long as you are moving and holding the run key, so if you hold down the run key while you are sneaking (crouching and walking at the same time), you will become exhausted even though you did not actually move at a running speed.

There are items such as the Energy Bar and Juice that improve your stamina and running speed. The Energy Bar allows you to run for an additional 8.5 seconds without becoming exhausted, and the Juice allows you to sprint, running 30% faster, for 10 seconds. Moth Jelly has the benefits of both the Energy Bar and Juice.

It should also be noted that when you are in a chase sequence, you have infinite stamina until the chase is over. You should be careful expending all of your stamina when there are entities nearby (and you are not in a chase sequence yet), since if you exhaust yourself, you will need to wait to recover your stamina, even if you end up being chased while you are tired.

Sanity: A meter found in your inventory that depletes when you are in dangerous levels (but the meter does not deplete on Easy mode). Some levels deplete sanity faster than other levels, making management of your time and items essential to beating the level.

You can restore your sanity by consuming food items like Almond Water, Juice, Energy Bars, and Moth Jelly. Almond Water is the only food item that restores 50% sanity; every other food item restores 25% sanity.

If your sanity is at 15%, Smilers will appear as hallucinations around you as a warning. If your sanity runs out, then you will die, even if you finish consuming something to gain sanity.

Levels are different areas from The Backrooms. The methods of entering/exiting a level vary: some levels only require you to find an exit, some levels require you to find keys to exit levels, and some levels have unique objectives for you to complete before you can leave the level. Most levels also have entities which typically make progression mor...

Level 0 is a complex of yellowish walls that seems like appear maze-like.

Your goal is to find a ladder and repair it to get a key, then find and unlock a wooden door using said key to get to the pitfalls.

The Howler is a tall, black and very slim creature with a wire-like frame, found on Level 0 (The Lobby), Level 0.11 (Water Damage), and Level 55.1 (Tunnel Level). After the player spends three minutes in the level, it will spawn in at a random location, though it is usually somewhere near the player, around a corner. If you see it, just run away, a...

    Section 1 (Cars)

In Section 1, there is an elevator with a number pad and storage rooms that contain useful supplies such as Almond Water and Flashlights. You need to explore the level until you find a room with four colored cars. Each car represents one of the four colors that are the correct combination. For example, if there are two blue cars, one red car, and one green car, the code would require you to press two blue buttons, one red button, and one green button. It does not matter what is actually on the number pad, nor does the order in which you press the buttons matter: all that matters is that you are pressing the correct colored buttons. Once you are done exploring, and the elevator is open, go inside it and press the button labeled "2", to go in the 2nd section.

    Section 2 (Keys)

In Section 2, you need to explore rooms scattered across the section, searching cabinets, drawers, and tabletops for four keys to unlock the exit. The keys are randomly spawned for every playthrough. This level is also patrolled by a Skin-Stealer (1 in Singleplayer, 2 in Multiplayer). It is a deceptive entity, mimicking a human voice, and will typically transform back from its original form to a player skin. Once you find all four keys, they can be used to unlock the exit in the central room, leading to the 3rd section.

    Section 3 (Elevator)

In Section 3, there are three floors. You must explore each floor and open doors until you find an elevator. The location of the elevator is randomly generated, with a 20% chance to spawn on the first floor, and an 80% chance to spawn on either the second or third floor (see map shown). There is also a Skin-Stealer patrolling the level's floors. When the Skin-Stealer is chasing you, you can interact with an empty room's door to instantly hide inside, after which it will lose interest and walk away. If you have not been chased by a Skin-Stealer in a while, though, the doors function as normal. When you find the elevator, enter it and press one of the elevator buttons to go to the 4th Section.

The Skin-Stealer is a humanoid entity with gray skin and sunken eyes found in Level 1, Level 5, Level 8, Level 0.1, and Level 55.1. It will chase the player, growling and running towards, and it can "steal" a player's skin upon killing them, confusing other players in the level who are still alive.

You can press C to pull out your ID Card and identify other players in multiplayer, but this is relatively obsolete, and more of an embellishment than a practical feature.

Do's:•Run away from it until you reach a safe area.

•Shut doors behind you, as it cannot open doors.

•Keep communication with your team to avoid being tricked, if in multiplayer.

Don'ts:•Attempt to ask someone running towards you for their ID Card.

The Hub is a unique level that acts as a nexus, connecting to multiple levels across the game. Some levels have a hub exit, though Level 1 (Habitable Zone) is the only hub exit you are required to use, and the rest are optional.

Once you enter this level, you must find a door in the left wall of the tunnel, go down the hall, you will find a door with a terminal and some jargon code. Simply, search through the three text columns to find the one matching with the text in the very right box, then select it. Repeat this process for the other two text columns, and the door will open to a Major Explorer Group (M.E.G.) base.

Once you are inside the base, open the electricity panel in the room to the right of the entrance, and turn the lights on (click anywhere 5 times). Then, you must interact with a computer to open the "gate" in the 4th section of Level 1. The password can be found on a nearby piece of paper in the level, and is always the same: "itheardyou" (though if you are playing the game in another language, this log-on phase is skipped entirely). After unlocking the computer, you can find documents describing various levels you have previously visit. Open the "gate.exe" file and run it.

Now, you can go back to the main tunnel, and re-enter the Level 1 door. The garage door will now be openable.

    Section 5 (Garage)

In this section, the lights periodically flicker and turn off, after which you will need to be in a light room. Once the lights turn off, Smilers will appear visible, and kill the player upon contact. In the light rooms are blue double doors on both sides. These doors have a chance of containing drawers that may have Almond Water, and one of the three rooms furthest towards the back of the section contains the exit to Level 2 (Pipe Dreams), though it is usually the one to the right. Simply move from one room to another when the lights turn back on, and open doors until you find the exit behind one of the blue double doors. B-hopping is useful here for reaching light rooms without running out of stamina.
