Nov 20, 2018 · The Soviet Mars 2 holds the dubious honor of being the first manmade object to touch Mars. But it did so more roughly than intended. Mars 2 entered the Red Planet’s atmosphere a bit too steeply, likely causing a cascade of bad signals that meant it never released its parachute. The craft plummeted to the ground, and was presumed destroyed.

The microchip problem caused the failure of the Mars 4 orbiter to fire its orbit insertion rockets.
