The demographic dependency ratio varies from one province and territory to another.
In Canada’s eastern and central provinces and in British Columbia, the proportion of people 65 years and older was higher than the proportion of children aged 0 to 14 years on July 1, 2021. However, the Prairie provinces and the territories showed the reverse, with higher proportions of children aged 0 to 14 than people 65 years and older.
