Apr 30, 2021 · The publication sheds new light on where and how much plastic flows into the oceans via rivers. With the help of new measurements and modeling, the study shows that 1000 rivers shed almost 80% of plastic emissions. This number is 100 times more than the 10 rivers that were previously thought to be responsible for most of the pollution.

Jun 7, 2017 · This suggests that at least 2.8–18.6% of the coastal plastic emissions occur via river transport. Furthermore, our findings indicate that an additional plastic input of at least 0.79–1.52 ...

Feb 1, 2018 · The results, published last November in Environmental Science & Technology, show that rivers collectively dump anywhere from 0.47 million to 2.75 million metric tons of plastic into the seas every ...
Feb 19, 2024 · To rid the world’s oceans of plastic, The Ocean Cleanup intercepts river plastic to stop the leakage alongside cleaning up legacy plastic in oceans. To help us target our river interception towards the most polluted places, we develop and refine global river models. Such simulations estimate the amounts of plastic that end up in rivers, and ...

Rivers are a major source of plastic waste in the oceans. We estimate that 1000 rivers, represented by the red dots, are accountable for nearly 80% of global annual riverine plastic emissions, which range between 0.8 – 2.7 million metric tons per year, with small urban rivers amongst the most polluting. The remaining 20% of plastic emissions ...
The Ciliwung River basin on Java, which is much smaller than the Rhine River basin (respectively, 591 km 2 versus 163,000 km 2) and with less total generation of plastic waste (respectively, 19,590 MT year −1 versus 34,440 MT year −1), emits two orders of magnitude more plastic into the ocean (308 MT year −1 observed and 205 MT year −1 modeled for the Ciliwung River, and 3 MT year −1 ...

Over the next 70 years, however, annual production of plastics has increased nearly 230-fold to 460 million tonnes in 2019. Even just in the last two decades, global plastic production has doubled. The world produces around 350 million tonnes of plastic waste each year. That means 0.5% of plastic waste ends up in the ocean.
