If you know a genre inside and out, you can probably listen to an album once or twice and have a pretty good idea where you'll eventually end up on it. I've been working my way through the NPR Top 50 albums of 2018, and many of them are in genres I only have a passing familiarity with.
If I need to review an album I'll have 1 proper listen (laying down, eyes closed, proper headphones) and then I'll listen to it at least another 5-6 times in the background, one of those checking the lyrics of each song on Genius. Otherwise, if it's just to form an opinion, 2-3 times can be enough.

I normally listen to an album minimum twice before rating it. Often the best albums takes 5-10 listens before it sits properly. I find that the albums I love from the beginning I often get tired of faster.
