If I need to review an album I'll have 1 proper listen (laying down, eyes closed, proper headphones) and then I'll listen to it at least another 5-6 times in the background, one of those checking the lyrics of each song on Genius. Otherwise, if it's just to form an opinion, 2-3 times can be enough.
I usually listen to an album on repeat for 2 times, the first listen is to 'taste' an album, so I know what the album sounds like. The second listen is a somewhat more focused listen, wherein I try to pick out details, and listen more closely.

If you know a genre inside and out, you can probably listen to an album once or twice and have a pretty good idea where you'll eventually end up on it. I've been working my way through the NPR Top 50 albums of 2018, and many of them are in genres I only have a passing familiarity with.

May 6, 2007 · My music listening is often but varies from day to day. One day I may only listen to one complete album, yet another day may include the review of two, three, or more. On average, I would say about one complete disc a day.
