STEP 1: SELECT your VERSE. Everything in your map will hinge on what verse (s) you select. Whether you’re reading through an entire book of the Bible, or moving around through verses of a specific theme, this is where you choose what your path will be for your study time.
- Read/Write the verse. Once you have your verse picked out, take some time to read the verse. If time allows it’s always a good idea to read the entire passage of scripture around your verse.
- Context. Anytime you are studying scripture you need to make sure that you understand what’s going on. Who’s the author, who’s the audience, and where in biblical history are you?
- Choose 2-3 other translations. Once you have an understanding of the context for your verse or passage it’s time to look at some other translations.
- Choose and research keywords. Using a highlighter, colored pencil, or your favorite pen mark the words or phrases that jump out at you. The things that you want to learn more about.
Choose your verse. Next, choose a verse you would like to study in-depth. One of the easiest ways to choose a verse is to just select a verse from the passage you are currently reading. Write the verse in your journal or on a Bible Verse Mapping worksheet. As you write the verse think about which words stand out to you.
Before filling in your map of the verse, I 10/10 recommend going back to the verse you’re studying and reading the entire Bible chapter it’s found in. Taking an extra minute or two to read through the passage as a whole helps us keep the Bible in context while using the verse by verse study method.
