Villagers must be "willing" in order to breed, and stop being willing after breeding. Villagers can be made willing again by trading with them or by picking up food. I assume you have put the villagers close to or on a farm, and so they will farm and collect food automatically, but it takes a short time for a villager to collect enough food to become willing.

The "village" needs to have more beds than villagers. Village in this case means the technical thing the game recognises as a village.

If a villager is "willing", villagers breed as long as there are unclaimed beds available within the limits of the village. Villagers don't care about dropped items other than food, so the blocks won't affect your farm. Villagers do, on the other hand, need to be happy in order to breed. Hitting them will lower their happiness, so in order to fix that, you will need to trade with them in order to raise it again.
