JavaScript runs in the browser, which dynamically requests maps from a server in the background (without reloading the whole HTML page) to give a smooth slippy zoomy map browsing experience. The implementation of this is provided by a JavaScript library, either OpenLayers or Leaflet.
OpenStreetMap is easy to get: just an instance of OSM. Satellite-tiles from ArcGIS need the X, Y (- coordinates) and Z (oom) properties in the URL to return the appropriate piece of the puzzle, so that makes it an instance of XYZ. The url info states the location where the tiles originate from.
I have an app that uses slippy maps.The tiles I'm currently using contain a lot of information that is superfluous to my users. I've been investigating generating replacement map tiles that contain only very basic features such as country/province boundaries, rivers, lakes, EEZ lines (the application focuses more on water than land) and maybe railways and major motorways when at high zoom levels.
