The fact that Ron and Harry's friendship in the movies is non-existent compared to Hermione's, its no wonder so many people ship Harry with Hermione over Ron. Ron let Harry enjoy guy things typical for their age. Not everything was serious. He got to be a kid because they were kids (even at 17-18 yrs old!). However, as someone with trust issues, I have to admit that if I were Harry I would have trouble ever forgiving Ron for GoF and for leaving. But Harry doesn't have my hang ups. lol.
And the fact that the most deep/intimate interactions of Harry and Hermione comes right after he leaves is kind of sad, knowing Ron never was or would be part of it. I love the realism in this. Friendships have rough patches, some do choose to leave and the way this chapter lets us right into the turmoil of trio (seemingly) falling apart is harrowing yet personally important and touching for me.
