  1. Roger Ebert. February 21, 1986. 3 min read. “The Hitcher” begins and ends with the same sound: a match being struck, flaring into flame. At the beginning of the film, the sound is made by the villain, a hitchhiker who is a mass murderer. At the end of the film, the sound is made by the hero, a young man whose life has been spared so that he ...

  3. The movie is a phenomenal piece of work. The stunts are good (even for the 80’s - who needs CGI am I right?), the violence and blood is really good and disturbing (who can forget Jennifer Jason Leigh’s scene) and it mostly takes place on the road and small gas stations (smaller atmosphere makes a movie a lot more intense).

  4. Budget. $7.9 million. Box office. $5.8 million. The Hitcher is a 1986 American horror thriller [2][3][4][5] film directed by Robert Harmon and written by Eric Red. It stars Rutger Hauer as the title character, a murderous hitchhiker who stalks a young motorist (C. Thomas Howell) across the highways of West Texas.

  5. Hitcher takes a great story and turns it into an unbelievable, frustrating mess. Murphy's Law is definitely the premise of this movie. It becomes so frustrating watching everything go wrong. And the movie is unbelievable to a ridiculous degree. The only good thing about this movie is Rutger Hauer who plays his part perfectly.

  6. The Hitcher is one of the best road movie ever. A top notch horror thriller with a mesmerizing claustrophobic climax and an one-of-a-kind cold and dark original score by Mark Isham. Haunting performance by veteran Rutger Hauer in what is one of his finest work to date. Do not take any considerations at the reviews of "critics" who claim that ...
