Asturian is a minoritized language since it exists in diglossia with Spanish (or Portuguese in Miranda), the language that occupies the social and communicative spaces of prestige and power (Guardado Díez 2008: 73).
Asturian is not stipulated as a co-official language of Asturies. That is, it is not given the same status as Spanish, as it occurs in a few other Autonomous Communities with their own regional languages.
However, since 1 August 2001 Asturian has been covered under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages ' "safeguard and promote" clause. [3] A 1983 survey [17] indicated 100,000 native Asturian speakers (12 percent of the Asturian population) and 250,000 who could speak or understand Asturian as a second language.
The present study examines the presence of Asturian, a minoritized language spoken in the Principality of Asturies, in the LL of a town located in the center of Asturies: Mieres. Through qualitative analyses, data illustrate that Asturian has visibility not only on top-down signage but also on bottom-up.
