Ultimately I think Ben was mostly a ‘bad’ guy, but he was almost brainwashed. He did everything, no matter the cost, in the name of Jacob (or his ‘good’). When Alex died and then it all became exposed by Jacob/Flocke that Ben and his life’s worth of actions didn’t really matter, he almost became good to ‘spite’ them.
There's a difference between being a villain and not being a good person. I would never call Ben a good person but I wouldn't classify him as a villain either. He's a self-interested, violent person that's capable of both good and bad, albeit mostly bad. Calling anyone in this show a villain is a massive oversimplification. Except for maybe Keamy.
