May 20, 2020 · Costco replaced it with a brand new one, no questions asked. You probably need to read the fine print on Costco's warranty as it applies to Apple products. I do agree with you that the $300-$400 cost of AppleCare + has risen to the point where it may be wise to look for alternatives.
AppleCare was $10 less at Costco than at Apple directly. ETA: With Target and Costco having same sale, I actually came off slightly better at Costco. The additional 5% at Target would have given me $16.50 back. The 2% at Costco plus the $10 off AppleCare, I saved an additional $16.65. Costco has a better return policy than Target.
Costco adds one more. AppleCare purchase would give you a third year. Is that one year extra coverage, plus the benefits under AppleCare (your fault breakage, essentially, which should be really rare for a desktop) worth the premium? In my eyes it isn’t for the cheaper studio, but for the more expensive one, I might be inclined to jump on it.
Apple care+ is a great product but I would choose the Costco citi card warranty (if you purchase the computer with the card). Costco’s warranty is far superior and they’re much faster than Apple would be. With Apple the turn around time is 7-14 days. Sometimes sooner if you go to a store than doesn’t have a huge demand for the genius staff.

Dec 5, 2019 · You have 60-days to purchase AppleCare+ or 1-year for AppleCare (not +) through Apple. They do have education and business discounts if you qualify. But according to the Costco website AppleCare+ is not sold separately, you may be able to get regular AppleCare.
