   Cracker is good. A lesser known one, no where near as gritty but same era, is Pie in the Sky. Definitely more quaint, but very British and good quality writing. I also like Lovejoy. Ian McShane 1990s detective series about antiques. Shakespeare and Holloway is another quaint style Nritish drama.

   • Cracker was a series that was brave enough to kill-off key players and make drama from the fall-out. It allowed the pivotal female character to be raped by a trusted colleague and then examined the devastation of that act at close range. Cracker depicted murderers and perverts as human beings, rather than just token cyphers of evil.

   Despite being a great fan of detective/mystery shows, from Agatha Christie, 'Inspector Morse', 'Midsommer Murders', 'A Touch of Frost', 'Taggart' and 'Foyle's War' to 'New Tricks', 'Monk', 'Columbo' and 'Murder She Wrote' and others {also found myself really liking 'Messiah', apart from the mess that was the fifth and last series), it took a while for me to get round to seeing 'Cracker'.
