Originally a land grant from the Mexican government to John Dickinson, the City is one of the oldest settlements on the mainland of Galveston County. As rail service was established in the area, by 1860 the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad offered service from Houston to Galveston with a stop in Dickinson.
Dickinson’s colorful past ranges from being inhabited by members of the Kawakawa tribe to being known as the “hub of Galveston County”. Settled in 1824, through a land grant from the Mexican Government to John Dickinson, the city remains one of the oldest settlements on the mainland of Galveston County.

By the 1970’s the cities of Texas City and League City, through aggressive annexation, began to encroach on Dickinson. Residents of the central area worked to incorporate the city in 1977. In 1990, the additional areas of town were annexed into the incorporated city. In 2012, the estimated population of the city was 19,092.
