Fletch is Chevy Chase's best movie, IMO. He is hilarious in this movie and everyone else in it also turns in a solid performance. And it's just a fun story about an investigation.
Fletch is a 1985 American comedy thriller film directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Andrew Bergman. Based on Gregory Mcdonald 's popular Fletch novels, the film stars Chevy Chase as the eponymous character. It co-stars Tim Matheson, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Geena Davis and Joe Don Baker.
“Fletch” is not the first movie that Chase has undercut with his mannerisms, but it is the best one-since “Foul Play,” anyway. His problem as an actor is that he perfected a personal style on “Saturday Night Live” all those many years ago, and has never been able to work outside of it.
Irwin Fletcher (Chevy Chase) is a smart-mouthed L.A. investigative reporter with pen name Jane Doe. He's infiltrating the drug trade at the beach when he's approached by Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson). He wants the supposed bum Fletch to shoot him because he has bone cancer. He's willing to pay $50k.

Great film, highly quotable, the balance of comedy and gritty thriller elements works really well. Chevy shifts gears easily between serious and funny, and the wise-ass character of Fletch suits him to a tee. There are too many good supporting actors in this film to list, but they all take this film to another level.
