I really don’t like Harry Potter, but the first and fourth movies are decent 3/5’s for me. Most interesting story stuff happens as opposed to the same old boring shit (plus unlike the last four movies, some colour was allowed in the cinematography).
Like the book, it feels almost stand-alone. Yet it builds so perfectly off of the story of the previous two, while tying even more to Harry's past. Alfonso Cuaron's direction was dynamic. He challenged the kids and brought out their best performances by leaps and bounds at the time.
