- Despicable Me. 2010. After over a decade, the film that started it all remains Illumination's best animated movie. This is the film that introduced the world to iconic supervillain-turned-dad Gru, as well as his even more iconic minions.
- Minions: The Rise of Gru. 2022. The sequel to Minions shows their role in the origins of Gru's legendary villainy. The film is set in 1970s San Francisco, with a star-studded soundtrack produced by pop legend Jack Antonoff.
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie. 2023. Video game adaptations are new territory for Illumination, but The Super Mario Bros Movie was a perfect fit for the studio.
- The Secret Life of Pets. 2016. In 2016, Illumination tried to create two new franchises to expand their domination of the animation industry beyond the Despicable Me series: Sing and The Secret Life of Pets.

This is the only CGI hybrid that Illumination produced, so far. Clearly, it was released at the time of the saturation CGI creature-centered family films, like Mr. Popper’s Penguins, The Smurfs, and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-wrecked. And the quality is rather reflected on the big screen. While the CGI creation of EB (voiced by Russell Brand) is...
Dr. Seuss’ adaptations had a bad track record on being attempted to film, so far. One of the most infamous cases is Illumination’s take of The Lorax. To give some credit, it stayed loyal on the original story, with Ed Helms as the Once-lerand Danny DeVito as the Lorax delivering their parts well. However, its additional story of a kid discovering t...
The Minions are the true breakout characters of the first Despicable Me movie that they had their entire subplot in the second movie. And two years after, they had their own spinoff, which became their highest-grossing filmwith a $1.159 billion income. RELATED: 10 Continuity Errors In The Despicable Me Franchise Even with that said, the film is a m...
For the third movie, the Despicable Mesaga takes a turn when it introduced Gru’s long-lost twin brother Dru, also voiced by Steve Carell. So, it gave more wiggle room for Carell to contend with himself as the weasel-voiced brother and the straight man. That is just one of several highlights in this middling third part. The subplot between Gru’s new...
In 2018 comes Universal’s second attempt of a Grinchfilm adaptation. While the 2000 Jim Carrey one was maligned for being inappropriate-looking, this one by Illumination was noted for being mediocre. Until now, it is still debated on which is the superior feature-length adaptation. But on the benefit of its own, it is colorful. It has notches of Se...
Here comes Illumination’s second plan for a franchise. While the first movie is an average family-friendly fare, The Secret Life of Pets 2is pretty much the same quality, only with lower ambition and less effort to be creative. Granted, the three central subplots converging in the end could work, but the film has no backbone to make it resonate. RE...
2016 is the landmark year of animated films featuring cities inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. One is the excellent Zootopia, and the other is the competent Sing. An animated film featuring various animals partaking on a singing contest, Singmay have a predictable plot (and another abundant marketing ploy) but it had legs as an engaging family ...
Pets lovers will easily fall in love with this fairly innocent animated film about a Jack Russell terrier named Max who had to contend with another dog, a shaggy Newfoundland mix named Duke, living in his owner’s apartment. The plot is immediately a knockoff of Toy Story. And there is the addition of a maniacal rabbit named Snowball (Kevin Hart), w...
After the unexpected success of Despicable Me, Illumination expanded their filmography with the CGI hybrid Hop, the animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and a Despicable Me sequel. With that, they pushed the animation further and expanded Gru’s story with a level of heart that Illumination managed to recapture. RELATED: 10 Plot Holes In The ...
But based on the rating, the first Despicable Me still stands as the highest rated movie from Illumination Entertainment. Ten years after its release, its cleverness is still fresh on the screen. Steve Carell’s vocal performanceof a Russian-accented supervillain named Gru is a funny one (for his straight man shtick) and an earnest one (for his subp...

- Hop. While Hop wasn't Illumination Entertainment's first film, they sure didn't learn any early lessons from the success of Despicable Me. Rather than stick to 100% animation, Hop opted for a hybrid of live-action and animation, plunking poor James Marsden down opposite a computer-generated Easter bunny, as voiced by Russell Brand.
- Despicable Me 3. The latest effort from Illumination is also among its greatest disappointments. It becomes quite clear while watching Despicable Me 3 that only the lowest common denominators from the series have been culled and distilled into a rather pointless and mindless 90 minutes.
- Minions. Ah, Minions. There is no real reason for this movie to exist other than as a remarkably successful cash-in on the studio's most successful original creation.
- The Secret Life of Pets. I had heard a lot of excitement over The Secret Life of Pets from friends, so imagine my disappointment when I discovered that it continued the mean streak kicked off by Minions.
