Aug 17, 2014 · I had a chance to pick up King of New York at GenCon and have played it a few times with various numbers of people. In my opinion, King of New York works best as a 5-6 player game. This is in contrast to my opinion of King of Tokyo which I feel works best with 3-4 players (I feel it can sometimes really drag in a 5-7 player game).
King of New York is a monster game with yahtzee mechanics, you can chew on buildings and army units so even if you don't hit anyone, it can still feel like a 'productive' turn. I think what we like about it is that whether you choose the path of player elimination or victory points, there are multiple faces on the die that can do it whereas Tokyo dice are definitely weighted toward getting points.
King of New York is a different game for sure. There are certainly many similar mechanics, but the feel of the game is definitely different. Moving between different locations and dealing with location management adds a fun new aspect to the game and being rewarded for staying in Manhattan longer is a nice change from the original (that plus having hospitals show up in Manhattan make it less ...

King of Tokyo doesn’t need an expansion and it definitely didn’t need to become king of New York. It’s great at what it is and for what purpose it serves. It’s an intro game for newcomers and a nice game I can play between heavier games at a game night.
