   Nov 7, 2011 · MSVC has the huge advantage of coming with an IDE that has no equals under Windows, including debugger support. The probably best alternative for MinGW would be Code::Blocks, but there are worlds in between, especially regarding code completion and the debugger.

   MSVC is fine if you are actually targeting Windows; MSVC is not nearly as bad as some here would have you believe. A fine reason to stick with GCC / Clang is if you really can't be bothered learning how to use Microsoft their tools.

   MinGW because it's the closest to GCC and gives me a good indication of whether or not my code will compile cross-platform without having to wait for the build system. My code has to run on OSX, Linux and Windows. Visual C++ because it often has higher performance with math calculations than MinGW. It's often comparable to GCC on Linux though.

   I would recommend using Visual Studio if you are building something specifically for Windows (ie, you are making a GUI application or you will be using the Windows APIs). If you want to build a crossplatform console application, then I would recommend using MinGW.

   Jul 27, 2024 · I'm making a 64bit based application for my small commercial, but it's better to use MinGW64 or MSVC2019 64 bit, what are the advantages and disadvantages of these two? I'm using dynamic not static applications. When I use MSVC on several laptops/computers, it requires vc_redistx64.

   MSVC is doing the compilation job significantly faster than MinGW-w64. The DLL sizes are comparable, if optimization is set to "-O2" for MinGW-w64, with "-O3" the DLLs from MinGW-w64 are larger. Binary files compiled with MinGW-w64 are performing significantly better than those compiled with MSVC.

   • If you have any info on this, thanks! Visual studio compiler is (or will be soon) available as a command line standalone application. So you can use any ide and compile with both compilers anyways. Personally I use eclipse and write code that compiles both with mingw and visual studio via cmake :)

   • They're not made to be substitutable plugins (although Clang is working on becoming that way). GCC is a fine compiler, and can produce code that has pretty much the same performance, if not better, than MSVC. It is missing some low-level Windows-specific features though.    • I would go with gcc (MinGW) or clang. If you combine it with MSyS2, you get nearly a linux-like environment. There is no reason to use MSVC, except you have to. It's a bloated compiler (Like some GBs of installation), not supporting newer C than C99 IIRC, and it is nearly unusable from the commandline

   • Cygwin, as mentioned in another post, will have extra dependencies and possible license issues (the dependency is GPL, so your programs must be, too). MinGW does not have any such dependency or issue. MinGW also compiles significantly slower than MSVC (though precompiled headers help a little).
