- If you’re looking for big-name new releases and original content that will be talked about over the water cooler at work, you’re likely to be disappointed by Popcornflix. It is not a realistic Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video or Disney+ alternative or replacement.

Popcornflix is a free on-demand streaming service that offers movies and TV episodes without the hassle of a monthly subscription. In exchange for the free content, Popcornflix inserts advertisements into the viewing experience.
- YouTube. YouTube-provided list of free movies. Films are organized into genre sections. No ads for Premium subscribers. What We Don't Like. Can't sort the free movies by popularity, year, or date added.
- Tubi. Movies are in their own list, separate from shows. High quality films. Provides trailers. Identifies when a movie is about to go away. Includes a kids category and live TV.
- Prime Video (Freevee) Properly separates movies from TV shows. Every category list can be filtered for relevant browsing. Includes trailers. App-wide search includes free filter toggle.
- Pluto TV. Watch movies while they're playing live on TV. Has on-demand movies that you can watch over and over. Works on lots of devices. What We Don't Like.
- Movies Are Easy to Find... Sort Of. Using the Popcornflix website is really easy. The menu, if you can call it that, is just three buttons along the top of the site.
- Video Quality Could Be Better. Many of the videos I've tested seem to be around the same quality as a regular DVD movie. The exact resolution of the films is unknown because you can't change the quality from the video, but they're certainly not high definition.
- Video Player Options. The video player is about as bare as possible while still providing the necessities. For a long time, Popcornflix had lots of unnecessary play options, like a GIF maker and timestamped comments.
- Several Ads Per Movie. While watching a few movies at Popcornflix, you might notice a trend with the advertisements. More often than not, the movies I watch start off with two 15-second or 30-second ads, and then there are more throughout the video.
- Tubi. Tubi is the best free movie app, hands down. Unlike other free movie apps, it offers recently launched movies free of charge. The reason Tubi has such a wide collection of fresh content is because of its partnership with many big Hollywood studios.
- Crackle. Crackle is another great app for watching movies for free. It used to be the online entertainment arm of Sony Pictures, but the Japanese technology and entertainment giant has divested its stake in the streaming service, selling it to a company called ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’.
- Pluto TV. Pluto TV is an amazing app to watch free movies on the go. You will be surprised to find the vast library of free content available on the app.
- Popcornflix. Popcornflix is a great free movie app to consume movies on the go. First of all, it’s available to users worldwide unlike Sony Crackle so that’s awesome.

- Kanopy and Hoopla. Streaming services Kanopy and Hoopla both have a large selection of high-quality movies—Kanopy even carries The Criterion Collection—but they’re only available if your local library system has a subscription, which also means you’ll need a valid library account to log in.
- PBS. PBS is home to shows like PBS Newshour, Antiques Roadshow and This Old House. While many titles are restricted to paying members, some of PBS’s online selection (taken from its TV programming) is available online for free, including a series of film school shorts.
- Tubi. Free streaming site Tubi offers movies and TV shows from several major studios with minimal (sometimes zero) advertising. The catch is that—judging by a spot-check—desktop streaming is limited to SD resolutions.
- Vudu. Paid streaming service Vudu has a free section offering an assortment of recognizable movies floating among less familiar titles. You’ll need to sign up for a free account and sit through some ads—and some movies are only available in SD, which isn’t great—but you’ll get access to more than 5,400 movies on your computer, phone or streaming device.
