Toriel's name is a play on the word "tu-torial," as she teaches the protagonist about how the game works. When attempting to name the fallen human "Toriel," the response is: "I think you should think of your own name, my child," and prevents the name from being used. Toriel is the only character that has a blinking animation in the dialogue box.
toriel seems like a side character between the main cast when i think about it now, probably because it's been a while since i played the game, but you don't actually see her for most of the game and action. yet still, she has a huge place in Undertale. both the tragic and the secretive part of her character are written very well.
Best thing Toriel's done, at least during the events of the story, is break up the fight with Asgore. Yeah she really twists the knife while she's at it, but given that every outcome of that fight results in someone dying, it's for the best. In addition to this wordplay, Toriel is similar to the name of a watcher angel in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity named Turiel (or Yoriel, depending on the text).
